NONEVENTS & OTHER UNHAPPENINGS

wandering back to the office from lunch today, i was stopped by an officer on first street. ‘get back,’ he said. ‘we have a suspicious package.’ he pointed it out. across the street, a long tube of sealed cardboard stuffed into a tree planter. it was then that i noticed swarms of police & firemen & the strange stillness of a noon hour w/out traffic. surreal.

anyway. i imagined the entire scene exploding in a thousand horrible ways for about twenty minutes… it was like a game, w/my imagination trying to outdo itself each time. i went inside to warn the only other co-worker in the office between holidays. we decided it would be safer to watch from the window of our old warehouse workplace. eventually we lost interest & went back to our jobs.

it’s now several hours later & i still haven’t seen any word of it on any local news sites. reminds me of june, the night i returned from europe, when some poor soul was shot multiple times outside my apartment at 3 in the morning. i called 911 (put on hold!), listened to his agonized screams for 10 minutes until the police arrived & then never saw a drop of ink in any newspapers about it. serious.
